How can I run my game as an 'Administrator'?

In certain instances, an operating system (XP, Vista, Win7, Win8, etc...) may not give a game the necessary permissions it needs to work as expected. This may cause the game to not start or run properly, or may cause 'saving' issues. Enabling the option to run the game as administrator may help in this case. Please review the information below for instructions specific to your particular operating system...

Windows XP

The first thing you'll want to do is check to see if you're already logged in as the Administrator...

  1. Right-click on the Start button/icon in the lower left corner of your desktop.
  2. A small menu will appear. If the options include Open All Users and Explore All Users then you have administrator permissions.

If you don't see those options, you'll need to log into your computer as the Administrator (presuming that you do have the necessary credentials of course!)...

  1. Open the Start menu and Log Off.
  2. Once the welcome screen appears, press and hold the CTRL and ALT keys on your keyboard, simultaneously pressing the DEL  key (delete).
  3. Log in as the Administrator (you may be prompted to enter the Administrator account password).

Once you're logged in as the Administrator, locate the program folder for your game...

  1. Open the Start menu and go to My Computer.
  2. Select Local Disk (C:) and open the Program Files folder.
  3. Within Program Files, locate the folder for your specific game.
  4. Right-click on the game folder's icon and select Properties.
  5. Click the Security tab near the top of the Properties window.
  6. In the upper section, there is a box listing all the users on your computer. Click on Administrator and/or the name of the users you intend to provide the administrator rights for.
  7. In the lower section, for permissions, check the Allow box next to Full Control. This will give full permissions to the users you selected above.
  8. Please be sure that all the boxes in the Allow column have been selected. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  9. Once this has been completed, try running the game again.

Windows Vista/Windows 7

  1. Click the Start icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
  2. At the bottom of the Start menu, type Folder Options into the Search box, then press the Enter key.
  3. Click on the View tab near the top of the Folder Options window and check the option for Show hidden files and folders (in Windows 7, this option would be listed as Show hidden files, folders, and drives).
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Return to the Start menu and select Computer, then double click Local Disk (C:). Open the Program Files folder. On some systems, this folder will be listed as Program Files(x86).
  6. In the Program Files folder, locate and open the folder for your game.
  7. In the game's folder, locate the executable (.exe) file for the game (it may show up as a faded icon next to the games title).
  8. Right click the file, select Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab at the top of the Properties window.
  9. Check the Run this program as an administrator box in the Privilege Level section. Click Apply, and then OK.
  10. After you've completed the steps applicable to your situation, try running the game again.
